For several weeks after I posted about Central BBQ, Ching’s and Bosses, I craved spicy Buffalo flavored Hot Wings. And every time I thought I had my craving under control, another wings suggestion came in. One such tip, which came from the same guy who turned me on to Roxie’s Grocery, was for the Honey Hot wings at Best Wings of Memphis. Best Wings of Memphis is located in a very small strip mall on Summer Ave., just east of where the two Parkways meet. Funny thing is, I’ve driven by it just about everyday for the past 3 years and never once noticed its existence between the Paris Adult Theater and the Exxon station.
Best Wings of Memphis has quite a menu variety to choose from. There are burgers, cheeseburgers, turkey burgers, Shrimp platters, catfish platters, fish sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and of course, chicken wings. But not just chicken wings. They serve them BBQ flavor, Buffalo, lemon and pepper, honey glazed, lemon pepper honey glazed and seasoned.
Even though I was told Best Wings had some of the best Honey Hot wings around, I craved Buffalo and nothing else. After patiently waiting in line for five minutes, I ordered 6 whole wings – Extra Hot, with with a side of seasoned fries and a drink. I think paid $9.00 and change. The kitchen staff moved pretty quick and in less than ten minutes, I was in my car and on my way with lunch in tow.
The whole way back to my office, the aroma filled my car and kept creeping into my nostrils. Man it smelled great. I couldn’t wait to get to my desk and tear into these wings. Upon opening the Styrofoam box, I knew right away this would be a messy lunch. The six whole wings were huge and just covered in a thick Buffalo sauce. There were just a couple sticks of celery and about four baby carrots served with the wings. There were also two small containers of bleu cheese and a dinner roll. I snapped a picture or two, collected as many napkins as I could find, opened up my dressings and dug in.
From my first bite, I could tell something was wrong. The heat was all there, but the taste just didn’t work. They were hot enough for me to break a sweat, but something was all wrong. It was Tomato Paste. The Buffalo sauce at Best Wings of Memphis is tomato paste based, giving them an awful sweet flavor that just didn’t work for me at all. Besides my not liking the sauce, I also didn’t care for the how quick the breading beneath the sauce turned soggy. It was really just an unenjoyable mess.
I tried to finish all six wings, but I just couldn’t do it. In my opinion, these wings were an insult to all great wings in this city.
I give the Hot Buffalo Wings at Best Wings of Memphis 1 out of 5 stars. I don’t even know what to say. Other than the smell and the heat/spice, I couldn’t find anything redeeming about these wings.
