Yesterday I had my first veggie burger from Caritas Village. Caritas is that Binghamton Community center, just off of Hollywood and Sam Cooper. Remember it now? That’s where I had that awesome Osho Burger a few months back. My plan was to eat a little lighter this week since tomorrow night is the Food Bloggers v. The Kookamonga Burger event at Kooky Canuck. I met up with a few friends at Caritas and saw on their menu that they offered a veggie burger. Even though I was tempted to get the gyro, I stuck to my guns and ordered the veggie burger with a side of potato salad and a coke. For $6.00 even, how could you go wrong?
I’ll tell you right now, I was skeptical going in. I like meat. Red meat. I didn’t have the highest of hopes for this burger, but when it was brought out to me, I thought to myself, “wow, I could eat this.” It really looked good. It was a good size veggie burger patty on a very toasted roll. On the patty was a generous portion of grilled onions and a slice off swiss cheese. The plate came with a very nice aroma. Although I knew I wouldn’t be getting that normal Angus beef taste, I couldn’t wait to get started on this new burger genre.
I was again pleasantly surprised. It nice seasoned flavor to it. The consistency was a lot like that of a crab cake, but a bit drier. Obviously there’s no fat percentage in vegetables to give a veggie patty the same qualities of a beef patty. The caramelized onions were delicious and really took the whole taste to another level.
Unfortunately, the whole experience went south on me very quickly. As I was eating the burger and got to several sections of the patty edge, it got extremely chewy. So chewy that I was barely able to eat those bites. Any enjoyment I had from the burger was quickly gone when I realized that the edges of the patty were most likely freezer burned. I ate the remainder of the edible center, but was pretty turned off by the whole experience. I will report that the potato salad was delicious and very fresh tasting. It quickly became my favorite part of the meal.
I give Caritas Village Veggie Burger 2.5 out of 5 stars. I really like Caritas, but I won’t be ordering their Veggie Burger again any time soon!
